Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a recent statement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has revisited the issue of ration card corruption in the state of West Bengal, while indirectly addressing the arrest of former Food Minister Jyotipriya Mallik. The political tension over this matter has prompted the Chief Minister to emphasize the steps her government took to rectify the issue.
According to Mamata Banerjee, when the Trinamool Congress assumed power in the state in 2011, they uncovered the presence of approximately 1 crore fake ration cards. Subsequently, her administration invalidated these 1 crore counterfeit cards and introduced digitalization to the ration card system. Notably, the state government's digitalization efforts earned praise from the central government for achieving 100 percent digitalization.
While the Chief Minister refrained from providing direct comments on the arrest of Jyotipriya Mallik, she conveyed her concerns about ministers being prematurely labeled as thieves even before their guilt is proven.
This statement from Mamata Banerjee comes against the backdrop of a broader political discourse concerning allegations of corruption in the distribution of ration cards in the state.
